I wrote The Confessions of Gonzalo Guerrero after a visit to Chichen Itza in the Yucatan. Much later, I discovered there was a monument to Guerrero on the island of Cozumel and wanted to see it. Well, recently, we went of Royal Caribbean cruise on the Rhapsody of the Seas and visited Honduras, where Guerrero died, Belize, where the Mayans were in control during Guerrero’s time, Costa Maya, which was a trading port called Mahahual during the Mayan time, and Cozumel, home of Guerrero’s monument. The Mayan world is very much alive in these places, and the whole place has been transformed into a siort of Mayan theme park, complete with costumed Mayans who cut out dollars instead of human hearts these days.
On Cozumel, we saw the monuments to the Mayans and to Guerrero. The man depicted on the statue has sort of a Kirk Douglas look and apparently works out at some Mayan health club, but it’s a worthy tribute.
